Avebury, Silbury Hill and West Kennet

Saturday 12th February 2011

Scott McCracken will be our guide for this prehistoric field trip to the chalk downland around Marlborough.

In the later Neolithic period 'non-domestic monuments – inexplicable structures such as lines of posts or stones and huge ditches, in complex arrangements', (C. Malone), became an integral part of the landscape. A part of the day will be spent at one of these henge monuments, the stone circles and processional way at the magnificent site of Avebury. Only a mile away is the largest man-made hill in Europe, Silbury Hill. The mound, behind Marlborough School and Grey Weathers at Fifield will also be on our itinerary. The day will end with a visit to the early Neolithic long barrow at West Kennet. A chamber tomb with side-passages, leading off a main passage.
