EMAS FIELD TRIP TO GLASTONBURY & MUCHELNEY ABBEYS

EMAS FIELD TRIP TO GLASTONBURY & MUCHELNEY ABBEYS

Saturday, 7th May, 2011

This Field Trip will be to the remains of the Benedictine Abbeys of Glastonbury and Muchelney, the two oldest foundations in Somerset.

Famed as the legendary Avalon, an abbey was first founded at Glastonbury by the Saxon king Ine c.700. However the site of this foundation was dictated by the presence of a wattle and sand oratory built at the behest of Joseph of Arimathea. The remains that exist today date from after the 1184 fire which destroyed the buildings of the Norman refoundation. The Lady Chapel is a superb example of the transition from Norman to Gothic architecture. Though only the outline of the abbot’s house remains the splendid abbot’s kitchen, begun in the 14th century, stands intact as a testimony to the immense wealth of this abbey.
