EMAS Field Trip to Fishbourne and Chichester

Saturday, 4 June 2011

This season’s Roman Field Trip will be to the Palace at Fishbourne and the nearby town of Chichester or Noviomagus Regnensium. Robin Densem, whom many of you know, will accompany us on this trip.

It is some while since we have visited Fishbourne, which is just over a mile away from Chichester. Dug by Barry Cunliffe in the 1960s, this site proved to be an unusually grand 1st century palatial building with sumptuous walls and floors. It was later extended and altered in the early 2nd century but burnt down at the end of the 3rd century. Further excavation has taken place recently and revealed further information about the palace and the extensive garden. In fact the whole Roman site covered some ten acres. David Sharp will be our guide and will discuss these new discoveries.
