Autumn time again !

I cannot believe it is nearly October and time to send out the EMAS Programme for 2011 – 2012.

I also want to take this opportunity to report the sad news of the death of one of our Presidents, Dr David Hill.  Members not only enjoyed David’s lectures but also recognised his prowess as an academic and archaeologist.  He was also an inspirational teacher, who encouraged many university and extra-mural students to follow a career in archaeology.  Some of you will have first met David when we were digging with him and Margaret Worthington on Offa’s Dyke, at Cookam and at Pont de l’Arche.  It was on these digs that some of the London and Manchester extra-mural members got to know each other.  David was a most supportive President and great friend to E.M.A.S.  He will be sorely missed.

Mark Hassall will be giving a lecture on 17th February 2012 in celebration of David’s life and work.

2010 – 2011 has also seen the deaths of other E.M.A.S. members, Chas Mifsud, Peter Chapman and Kathy Leadbetter, whose company will be greatly missed at various events and activities.

The programme so far confirmed for 2011 – 2012 is enclosed.  The membership subscription remains at £13.  We hope you will wish to renew your membership and join some of the events on the Programme.

Though we welcome the co-operation that exists between the Birkbeck Archaeological Society (BAS) and EMAS by attending each other’s lectures, please note ANY TRIPS OR ACTIVITIES ORGANISED BY BAS are quite separate from EMAS.

BAS details can be found on their website given at the end of the EMAS Programme.  (Harvey Sheldon is leading a Roman London walk for BAS on Saturday 15th October.
