EMAS FIELD TRIP TO RYE & WINCHELSEA IN SUSSEX

Nikolaus Pevsner emphasizes the fact that both Rye and Winchelsea, like Lewes in Sussex, were hill towns – quite a rare phenomena in Britain. Both became Cinque Ports. Both were affected by the encroachment of the sea and were in economic decline by the sixteenth century. Rosemary Yeaxlee will be our guide around these two medieval towns.
